Show Me/Tell Me Questions

Driving Lessons Driving Schools Driving Instructors in Gloucester.

Q1: Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.

A: This involves you opening the bonnet. You would check by removing the dip-stick, wiping it clean of oil, dipping it back in, removing it again and the oil should leave a mark between the maximum and minimum marker.

Q2: Tell me how you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that it has the correct level.

A: This involves you opening the bonnet. The coolant can be checked by looking at the maximum and minimum levels found on the side (never open the coolant when it's hot).

Q3: Tell me where the windscreen washer reservoir is and how you would check the windscreen washer level.

A: This involves you opening the bonnet. It can be checked by opening it up and checking that it has sufficient washer fluid inside.

Q4: Tell me where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

A: This involves you opening the bonnet. It can be checked by looking at the maximum and minimum levels found on the side of the brake fluid reservoir.

Q5: Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

A: Tell the examiner you would start the car, drive forward slowly and try the foot brake. It should stop the car and the pedal should feel firm and not spongy.

Q6: Tell me how you would check the tyre pressure and how you would know how much air to put in to the tyre.

A: Tyre pressure information can be found in the car manual. You can check the tyre pressure by using a tyre pressure gauge when the tyres are cold. Don't forget the spare wheel, and replace the valve caps.

Q7:Tell me how you can check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use onthe road.

A: The tread depth can be measured using a tread depth gauge. The legal minimum amount of tread should me no less than 1.6mm of tread in the central ¾ of the tyre and the entire outer cicumferences, and there shouldn't be any cuts or bulges on the edge of the tyre.

Q8: Tell me how you would make sure that the head restraint is correctly adjusted.

A: Tell the examiner that the head restraint should be adjusted so that the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as your eyes (or top of your ears) and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.

Q9: Tell me how you would check the headlights & tail lights are working.

A:Turn the ignition on and turn the headlights on. Tell the examiner that you would then get out and check that both front headlights and the back tail lights are working properly (check from the pavement).

Q10: Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.

A: Tell the examiner that you would start the engine and a warning light will stay illuminated on the dashboard if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

Q11: Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on the car (examiner can help).

A: Ask the examiner if they can check the back of the car while you turn the ignition on and press the foot brake to activate the brake lights (don't start the car though). You might also be able to see the reflection of the lights on a wall or in windows.

Q12: Show me/explain how you can check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

A: Tell the examiner that you would start the car and move the steering wheel a little left and right. It should feel easy and light to steer and not heavy.

Q13: Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.

A: Turn the ignition on and operate the windscreen washer lever.

Q14: Show me how you can check the direction indicators are working.

A: Turn the hazard warning lights on, get out and check from the pavement that the front indicators are working and the back ones (both sides).

Q15: Show me how you would set the demister controls to demist the front and rear screens.

A: Turn the fan on, twist left dial round to blow on to the front window, press the rear demister button to demist the rear and turn the right dial for warm air.

Q16: Show me how you can check the horn is working (off road only).

A: Press the centre of the steering wheel (the horn) and you should hear that it works.

Q17: Show me how you would switch on the fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them.

A: Turn the ignition on. Turn the dipped headlights on and then the rear fog light. Check that the warning light is on for the fog light (no need to get out or switch the engine on). Explain that you would only use the fog light(s) if visibility was poor and that you could not see further than 100 metres.

Q18: Show me how you can check the handbrake (parking brake) for excessive wear.

A: Press the foot brake, release the handbrake, re-apply the handbrake and the handbrake shouldn't come up too high and the car shouldn't move when you release the foot brake.

Q19: Show me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst in the car.

A: Turn the ignition on. Twist the end of the light switch from off position, then side lights, then to dipped. You then need to pull the lever towards you for the main beam. Tell the examiner that you can see the (blue) main beam warning light is displayed on the dashboard.

My 1st Lesson Experience...

""I started driving lessons in South Africa about 10 years ago, but only had a few, never having been behind the wheel since until.......

Fast forward to 2013 and now having a growing family, I knew that having the ability to drive is an essential part of our lives.

I was extremely nervous during the days leading up to my first driving lesson, but upon meeting my driving instructor Mike, I knew that I was in safe hands. I was still very anxious and lacking in self-confidence, but he helped me overcome my fear of traffic on the open roads, with constant encouragement, brilliant teaching techniques, patience....and made me feel relaxed."

Tammy Mahoney, Gloucester

Mike is so easy to get along with and I really enjoyed my lessons...

"Mike Williams was my instructor, and a good one he was! I started with Mike when he was with a national driving school, and stuck with him when he left, and staying with Mike was a very good idea. He would tell you instructions, how we would understand. If I did something wrong he would tell me and make me do it untill I did it perfect. That helped me alot, he wouldnt let me give up on anything I was stuck on! It was never awkward when I was taking my lessons, we would always have a chat and a laugh! Mike is so easy to get along with and I really enjoyed my lessons. He would always encourage me which was a great help, kind of miss my lessons now!"

Libby Cookson, Gloucester

His teaching methods were brilliant!

"I had my driving lessons with Mike Williams, as he was recommended to me for which I was glad. I would most definitely highly recommend him as a Driving Instructor.

He is friendly, so easy to talk to and teaches you so well that you learn faster but properly, saving you money. His teaching methods were brilliant! I learnt quickly and could afford to do so as his prices are so great!

It wasn't long before I was taking my Test feeling really confident, and passed 1st time, with only 4 minors.

To sum up...great prices, nice car to drive and an amazing driving instructor. I'm so glad I went with Mike and wouldn't of thought twice about going with someone else."

Rose Powell, Gloucester

Mike explained everything in a way that made sense...

"For many years I had lessons on and of but never continued for one reason or another, but this year decided I just had to do it! I started lessons with Mike who explained things in a way I understood, was easy going and made me feel like I was actually getting somewhere with my lessons. It's easy to come away feeling confused and forgetting things when they aren't explained properly, and Mike explained everything in a way that made sense.

When you enjoy your lessons it is easier to continue and succeed! As a result I've now passed and only had Mike to thank for that!.....he is now teaching my daughter who also feels relaxed with Mike and is quite happy in her lessons. BIG THANKYOU! It really has been a pleasure and I don't have to rely on the buses anymore!!"
